"I hope you didn't know the fellow," Tsaron muttered darkly. "One o' the baddest of a bad lot," the owl continued, noting Madeline's move and the impending Kingship, but tactfully ignoring it. It had been an interesting game, with two talented players facing off, but the time had come to end it so the Sandeyes could prepare for their parents' arrival.
"Don't remember th' name," Hiacynth mused, thinking for a bit. "Used to sing the worst ditties, too. Heh, I'm surprised Taurian didn't wring 'is neck. That've stopped 'is 'orrible singin'."
"I don't think Argrav liked 'im much. Always tried t' steal 'is thunder," Tsaron commented.
"Who was tryin' to steal whose thunder?"
"Does it really matter?" Tsaron asked, condescendingly.
"Suppose it doesn't. You wrapping up that game?"
"Three minutes," Tsaron replied. He peered at the board, assessing future moves. "Maybe two," he amended.

“Don’t remember? That’s all right.” Edoran patted both of them on their shoulders. “It is indeed best to forget, anyway. I do remember that this particular neighbor of ours possessed an interest in my siblings. Not in the best or most mature of ways. He lived right next door to us, and spent his time as an unwanted spy on my siblings’ privacy. If this creature is associated with Argrav, and did follow us here from New Brunswick….I can’t imagine what he might try to do to Jared and Madeline now.”
Madeline inched towards Tsaron’s side of the board, the chance for game royalty approaching fast. Finally, she found her place and converted one of her pieces into a King. To speed the endgame, she jumped the last of Tsaron’s pieces and emptied the board of them. A humble and grateful smile spread across the squirrelmaid’s face, a paw extended outward to shake the owl’s wing.
“Game over, dear new friend Tsaron. Thank you for inviting us to play this wonderful game. You as well, Hiacynth. You’ve both made our day. We must do this again sometime in the future!”
She turned in her chair to face her siblings. “Now, I do believe it is time to go home, my brothers.” She kissed their cheeks lovingly. “We’ll be OK as long as we stick together, right?”
Larina removed her ankle from Jared’s lap and dropped it on the floor. The massage from her new male friend soothed the pain to a great degree. With Jared’s help, she grabbed her purse, stood up, and made the way to the café door.
“I’ve got much to do tonight, myself. But for you, Jared, I’ll keep my phone within reach. Keep in touch, all right? I can show you around Mitchfield and Hickory tomorrow.” Blowing him a kiss, she left the resturant.
Jared’s blushing reached a deep tomato-red. “Does she do this to every guy she meets?”
“Probably just you, little bro!” Edoran laughed. “Let’s pack up the checkers board and get on the road back home. Mom and Dad will be here in an hour, so there’s no time to waste.”
