Fernleaf smiled at Balma. "And I would do it again. I am very rusty in the use of weapons, but I would do it if it would defend those who would destroy all. I think the Badger Lord before whom I made my vow long ago would understand, that I vowed never to bear weapons to harm any goodbeast. I never vowed not to harm vermin." He felt shocked to use that word, as he had once been a vermin himself.

A reluctant sigh came forth from Madeline. She glanced at Jared, whose face was still buried in his shirt, no doubt daydreaming of his girlfriend whom he’d soon meet at breakfast.
“We’ll try to explain as best we can. Edoran and I, anyway.” Maddie kissed her brothers’ cheeks, then launched into the story without preamble.
“This new vermin goes by the name of Garkul DemonFang. He works alone, although with a loyal army. Captured us once a couple years ago, and he and Jared got into a brutal fight. Long story short, Jared won, and Garkul, his lower jaw broken, has wanted payback ever since. It’s…not going to be pleasant, believe me.”
“But then, why reiterate what has already been said?” Edoran asked. “There’s nothing we can do to stop Garkul from moving. By my calculations, Garkul will arrive in Mossflower in 2 ½ days. Then, he will head straight to into the forest. Martin forbid – our Eastern ancestors forbid! – Garkul ever finds the location of Redwall Abbey!” His face and voice fell gravely serious, cuddling his siblings close.
Dane and Amida Sandeye stood up. “Well, none of us can truly say how your friends will react to us being here,” Dane noted. “All the other times we’ve visited you two, Jared and Maddie, have always been in private. This here is our first time being seen by others. But Fernleaf, Mother Snowpaw, Balma, we’ve no objections to raise. You are welcome to consult us anytime you are in need of aid.”
Amida raised her paw and waved for her family to accompany her to the kitchen. “Now then, my dear husband, sons and daughter, shall we go to breakfast? You dear three, will you be joining us?”

Balma took a moment to consider this new information. Hearing Amida's query, her answer was immediate.
"Well, it's not as if there's anything I can accomplish that isn't already being done outside at this moment. I haven't eaten since yesterday's lunch, so it wouldn't hurt to get something in my stomach, it'll make me think better."

"That's the best thing I have heard today." said Fernleaf. "I'm so hungry I could eat that horde out there." Snowpaw chuckled and said "Then let's go get something to eat." They both went with them.

The Sandeyes led the way into the Abbey kitchens and dining areas; the parents and Edoran phasing through the walls and door, and Jared and Madeline opening the same door for Snowpaw, Fernleaf, and Balma.
Coming down the hallways and passing several beasts, they were met with astonished and awed looks. Ghosts, in the Abbey! A marvelous sight to behold! Legends of Mossflower only ever told of the spirit of Martin appearing in Redwall Abbey. Many wondered then whom these unfamiliar ghosts were, and why they chose the Abbey as the place to appear. Regardless, they were welcomed with glad hearts and cheerful smiles.
At a large table near a window waited two young squirrels, a maid and a male, around the ages of Jared and Madeline. The maid was Larina Skyleaf, Jared’s aforementioned love interest; the other was Divan, a childhood friend of the Sandeyes.
“Oatmeal, assorted fruits, eggs and hash browns!” Larina announced, gesturing to the spread on the main counters. “Bread and butter, muffins, and the leftover vegetable soup, too! Something for everyone!” She took Jared’s paw and led the way. Madeline and Divan shared an embrace, then the former introduced him to…
“Wow! No way! That’s awesome!” Divan’s jaw dropped at the sight of the spirits of the Sandeye family.
“Divan!” Edoran grabbed the youngling by the shoulders and ruffled his headfur. “How are you, little sport?”
“This has never happened before!” Divan pulled away, gladly leaving his hair ruffled. “All the other times you’ve visited Jared and Maddie, you’ve done it in private with them! Why choose to show yourselves publicly now?”
“It’s a long story, Div,” Edoran replied, chuckling and squeezing his friend's shoulders. “Get your food and I’ll explain.”
Amida gestured to Snowpaw, Fernleaf, and Balma to join them in the kitchen while Edoran and Dane set up enough chairs for everyone. “Let’s eat, all of us together. There’s plenty of food to go around.”
Larina nudged Jared’s shoulder affectionately. “Jared, let’s not allow a vermin horde outside Redwall Abbey’s walls to stop us from pursuing our passions of art, right?”
“Nothing to worry about, I hope,” Jared assured, though more himself than her, moving a bite of oatmeal to his mouth and chewing.
Divan approached Fernleaf and Balma. “Newcomers to the Abbey? I’m a foreigner myself, too. My name is Divan, a Maraulian, and friend of the Sandeyes. That over there is Larina.” He indicated her with a nod over his shoulder, and whispered lightly, “She’s Jared’s girlfriend.”
