The sun was setting over Redwall Abbey, which meant bedtime for dibbuns was rapidly approaching. Rylee was not ready for bedtime. The little mole sat around on her bed in the dormitories, sorting the flowers she had picked earlier. She had a lot of dandelions, those were both pretty and good for snacking on. She made sure no one else was watching and ate one of the dandelions. Having sorted the flowers, she decided she didn't have nearly enough. Rylee climbed down from her bed, and went to go see if any of her friends wanted to sneak back out onto the abbey lawn and help her pick flowers. They'd have to be sneaky because dibbuns weren't allowed out after dark without adults.

Chamberlain was very much against bedtime. As far as he knew, bedtime was a silly thing invented by bigbeasts to wrangle the little ones up and trick them into sleeping. Who wanted to sleep? What good was it? You couldn't play in your sleep!
The squirrel had been sitting up in his little bed, wiggling his toes and chittering to himself, trying to decide whether or not toes were supposed to wiggle quite so much, when he noticed Rylee walking around out of bed. Despite the barriers of language that could occur between a young mole and a squirrel with oddly-developing speech patterns, Chamberlain was always excited to play, and eagerly leaped down behind her.
In a whisper, he asked, "Whatta doin'?"

Rylee liked Chit. He was smaller than her, but he was fun to play with, and was always wanting to do something with you. He would be the perfect companion to take flower picking.
"Oi bees gowin outsoide furr picken ee flowers. We'm needs lots and lots so oi can make ee dormatee gurtly bootiful." She took the little squirrel by the paw and started walking with him towards the door.
"Bed toime bees for likkle beasts. We'm bigger an' can go owtsoide. 'sides, oi'm not sleepy."

Chit was quite excited at the prospect of flower-picking. Flowers smelled nice, usually, and were very pretty to look at. He knew that some of the bigbeasts liked to pick flowers and press them in journals to keep forever, and had wanted to try it himself. If he could find a book, he was sure he could use some of the flowers they picked to put in it.
"I'm notta sleepy, neither."
Securing his fingers in her hand, as they approached the door, he reached up and grappled at the handle for a moment before successfully pulling it open. Long shadows cast down the hall outside the room, but candles burned in increments, providing light for any beasts wandering about at night.
"Fink any bigbeasts around?"

Pausing to look both ways, Rylee confirmed that there were no bigbeasts wandering around the halls. They were all probably downstairs in Great Hall or Caver Hole, where they liked to sit and talk. Sitting and talking was boring, as far as she was concerned.
"b'aint any bigbeats. c'mon Chit. We'm need to be quiet. shh." She gently led him down the hall, keeping an eye out for anyone who might send them back to bed. Papa Cornelius would be the worst person to come across. He wouldn't hesitate to send the two of them back to bed, and they'd get a good scolding too probably. Rylee let go of Chit's paw so that she could be more careful climbing down the stairs. So far they'd made it without getting caught. Rylee thought she could hear voices down the stairs though, but they were faint, so she decided they were still good to go ahead with going outside.

Rylee's leadership gave Chit the courage he needed to confidently follow along. He usually didn't care about punishments and being scolded - bigbeasts weren't really mean creatures, they were just nuisances. However, the prospect of actually making it outside was so thrilling, he decided tonight would be the first time he successfully snuck out. With Rylee, there was no way they could fail.
As she started making her way down the stairs, Chit followed, turning backwards and climbing down one at a time. He was very agile, being a squirrel, and certainly could've gone down head-first just fine, but this way was more fun. Ears perking a little, Chit thought he heard a conversation, and made a point of staying close to the wall, hopefully out of sight.
"The door idn't too far," he murmured under his breath, gesturing down the hall a ways. He couldn't tell where the voices were coming from, the way the walls made things echo.

"Well goodnight everyone, I think I'll check in on the little ones before I pop off to bed." Father Cornelius waddled up the steps from Cavern Hole, leaving all of the other adults to their adult discussions. Humming quietly to himself, he passed in front of the tapestry towards the stairs that led to the dormitories. He shuffled down the hallways, looking comically too large to be allowed, as always. As he gradually neared the Dibbun dormitory, he began to walk on his tip-claws, moving slowly and silently so as not to wake any of them and cause a ruckus. But he was apparently too late for that, for as he noticed, the door was slightly ajar. Oh ho ho! It appeared as though he had two escapees on his paws! Poking his large, striped face in the doorway, his suspicions were confirmed when his tiny black eyes locked on to the two empty beds. Looking around at all those sound asleep, he quickly deduced who the runaways were; Chamberlain and Rylee. Both a pair of...'spirited', little souls. Cornelius smirked deviously to himself. He didn't want to go shouting and stomping down the halls and causing a scene, he preferred to apprehend troublemakers quietly, without embarassing them. Turning back the way he had came, Cornelius hurried (on his tiptoes) back down to the main door to exit the Abbey. There he crept over to the wall beside it and pressed himself flat in to the brickwork with his back to the tapestry of Martin, it was amazing how well a creature so big could hide given the right lighting.
-------
At the opposite end of the Abbey building, another pair of young creatures were planning on sneaking outside after their bedtime. "But what if we get caught?" complained Daniel, as Ryan dragged him by the wrist in a flurry of movement through the brick halls. "Pah! Then we'll have to wash a few extra dishes then, won't we?" Ryan sighed with an exasperated roll of his eyes. "Relax, you're with me mate. I don't get caught. With your brain and my daring and charisma," (here he held his head high and ruffled his hair), "what could possibly go wrong for us?" Daniel frowned and began counting exactly what could go wrong on his fingers, though this was hard while being dragged along at a break-neck speed which meant he barely even needed to run. Though he tried not to worry too much about such things since they had moved into adolescence, he couldn't help being a stickler for the rules. Although their bed-time was far later than the Dibbuns', they were still up well past it, and being so young there was still consequences should they be caught.

Rylee decided to just be brave and lead herself and Chit to the main door. The bigbeasts were all talking so it would be okay. Plus little paws were pretty quiet, there was no way any bigbeasts would hear them. She tugged Chit along gently.
"C'mon Chit. Thurr bees no one. We'm open a door gently."
She let go of the squirrels paw and reached up to try and tug the door open. The door was a little heavy, and she was only just able to reach the handle. Pulling the door open was the hard part. "Oi need 'elp."

Looking up at the great, looming door, Chit was wary of their position. Even if they were quiet, maybe someone would notice the door opening? However, Rylee was still as confident as when their escapade started, and with a huff, Chit rubbed his forepaws together before reaching up alongside his friend, paws hooking around the door handle. He was on his tip-toes, but he could reach it decently that way.
They needed to be quiet, but the job simply wouldn't get done without putting a little backbone into it.
"We'sa tug! Hard!" Chit whispered through his teeth, reeling back with all his might, almost teetering off balance.

"Here, let me get that for you." a kindly voice spoke suddenly, close enough to the pair to not be raised. An enormous dark arm loomed before them, and two fingers grasped the door handle and tugged it gently open. But before the pair could dash outside, an enormous shape shuffled along to stand in the doorway, far too big to be any other creature in the Abbey but one. "Now, let's see here." the paw of Redwall's badger guardian reached down and made to grasp the two naughty young creatures by the backs of the collars of their clothes, aiming to hold them up level with his enormous stripy face, the white fur illuminated by the candles on either side of the doorway. "What might two young dibbuns who should be in bed such as you possibly want with going outside at his hour, hmm?"
---
Daniel and Ryan and continued on down the stairways and were almost in the entrance hall, the latter's confidence now starting to rub off on the former. "See? I told you!" Ryan was laughing a little too loud for so late at night. "Nothing to worry abou-" he broke off, seeing the huge shape of Cornelius in the doorway a matter of centimetres from them. "Uh oh. Back up, back up!" he whispered from the corner of his mouth. "Slowl-" "Not, so fast boys!" The two of them flinched, then shamefacedly shuffled forwards. Daniel was struck with a sudden idea however, "Oh! T-There you are!" he gestured exaggeratedly to the two dibbuns. "W-We came to check on them because we heard noises, a-and went into their dormitory and saw that they were missing. T-Then-" He was cut short as Corenlius' free paw shot out and grasped them both by the backs of their tunics and hoisted them into the air until they were eye-level with the badger. "Nice try." smirked Ryan half-heartedly, dangling from the paw in a slow circle.

Rylee squealed as the huge badger picked her up. She wiggled around to try and get loose, but Father Cornelius' grip on her was too strong, so she just let herself go limp. She was filled with disappointment, it looked like she wouldn't be getting any more flowers tonight, and she got her friend Chit caught too. She wanted to explain to Father Cornelius that she just wanted to pick more flowers, but he was so big and so close, she couldn't find the courage to say the words. She took a deep breath and managed to say one word, hopefully that would help. Maybe Chit could get them out of this.
"Flowers."
She turned her head to look at the two mice that just showed up. She wasn't sure of their names, but they seemed to know her, and said they were coming to look for her. Father Cornelius grabbed them too and that made Rylee glad because maybe he would be more mad at them and not her.
