She'd stood there in the shadows until the sun began to rise, looking up at the abbey's imposing walls from the shade and security of the woods. The ferret knew nothing of Mossflower but what she'd heard in myths and legends, where the blood-red building often formed the center of the story.
There it had been a place of bumbling, naive weaklings, or the impenetrable fortress home of a tribe of bloodthirsty warriors. In either case, woodlanders, and that spelled risk for her all by itself.
But she'd exhausted her supplies, with no time or skill to replenish them on her own, and as the first spatter of civilization she'd come across in the country, it was the last place anyone would think to look for her.
Valetamine made her way around to the front gate in full view of the walls, never once casting a look up above. If any sentries had spotted her, they'd not thought to throw any javelins down at her, and with no such encouragement to leave, she gave the doors at the gate a few good hard raps and stood away.
"Hello to the ramparts! Could this be the Red-walled Castle I have heard so much about?"
The ferret put on her best disarming smile, paws far from the weapon at her side, but her eyes and ears remained alert.

Private Burrswop was rather pleased with himself. Letting those otters in had been the right choice, their skipper had been needed for the meeting that was going to start shortly in Cavern Hole. His ears pricked up when somebeast below hailed the Abbey.
"Hello to the ramparts! Could this be the Red-walled Castle I have heard so much about?"
He peeked out over the edge of the ramparts again. Standing below on the path was a white furred ferret, grinning up at him. Burrswop's heart started racing, and he glanced around for signs of more vermin. this ferret seemed to be all on her own, and no officers were around, so Burrswop took it upon himself once again to deal with the situation. After all, what harm could one vermin do?
"Hullo down there! State y' name an' business at Redwall Abbey!"

"Of course, my good hare!"
The ferret took a step back, raising a paw to her chest in humble gesture with the hare's request. Her eyes were not humble at all.
"I am called Valetamine, of the honorable house of Lemand, but I am nought but a simple wanderer, hoping to find a place of shelter where I may rest and replenish my supplies before again returning to my travels."
Empty concern then filled her voice, and her smile weakened before she spoke again.
"That is, if it is of no trouble to you, though I have heard many a warming tale of this place's reputation for hospitality, and know not where else I would go to receive such of the same."

The ferret's words seemed sincere enough to the Private, yet at the same time, the fact she was a ferret unsettled him. She could very well be one of the vermin who had been involved in slaying their patrols.
"I can't offer you hospitality, only the Abbot can do that, wot!" He called back down. "But if y' want, I can let y' in, if you'll give up all weapons on y' person. You'll have to wait to speak to the Abbot though! He's in a meetin'."

Well, that was easy.
Valetamine didn't know what to expect of any beast carrying the title of 'Abbot', other then that he seemed to be in charge here, but if the place was run by beasts such as whom had greeted her, the ferret didn't expect there to be any trouble.
As for her weapon...
"That seems fair..."
She laid a paw on the pommel of the blade at her side for a moment, as if to remind herself it was still there.
"Supposing I get it back, of course. You want me to just leave it here on the ground, or have you some other plans?"
Val almost asked him if he would trust her enough to hand it to him herself, but thought better of it. She certainly wouldn't be so trusting if the roles were reversed.

"Go ahead and set it on the ground! I'll have someone retrieve it an' you can have it back on the way out! I'll be down right away!" Burrswop turned to go let Valetamine in, when he was waved down by another hare who had been alerted by all the shouting, and had made his way over.
"I say, what's with all the shouting over here? Find more otters, wot?"
Burrswop shook his head, and gestured over the wall. "There's a vermin type waitin' on the path down there askin' about hospitality. I told them to have a word with the Abbot once his meetin's done."
The other hare took a look over the wall to where Valetamine was waiting. Placing a paw on his blade, he started off down the stairs. "Best let me come along then, Private. Can't trust vermin, wot."
Together, the two hares made their way to the main gate, and opened it just enough for Burrswop to peek his head out to make sure Valetamine was disarmed.

It was a fine sword, perhaps one of the best to come out of the Lemand forges. The product of slave labour, perhaps, but expertly crafted nonetheless; it said something of the quality of beasts once kept in her family's possession.
Valetamine paused for a moment to glance at her own reflection on the blade before setting it down in it's scabbard, on the ground as the hare sentry had asked. She wasn't a sentimental beast, but the weapon shared a history with her, something nothing and nobeast else alive did.
When the gate opened for her she almost moved to pick the sword up again. The sentry from the wall wasn't alone.
"What's this? I think it's very kind of your friend to come and greet me with you, sir hare, but I've only brought the one sword, and it's there on the ground like you asked."
She grinned again, but it was more nervous this time.

"Sorry marm, he invited himself." Burrswop opened the door wider so Valetamine could enter. "Once you're inside I'll take y' to get some food or something, wot. Keep y' company until the Abbot is available to speak to. My friend will hold onto your sword, it'll be in the gatehouse for when you leave."
The hare that had accompanied Burrswop down went and took Valetamine's sword, before leaving the Private alone with their guest.
(bleh sorry this is short)

(Post was delayed due to exams, also don't worry about your post length, anything that moves the thread along is fine by me, and your posts have all been very good.)
The ferret watched the other hare suspiciously as she walked by the gate, but said nothing more on the subject, satisfied enough with the sentry's explanation.
"I do like the sound of that; a drink would be especially nice."
Scanning the abbey's wide grounds, Valetamine could only try unsuccessfully to keep her curiosity at bay.
"You're from this place, yes? Perhaps you could show me around while we wait?"
Before there was a chance for any reply, she remembered something.
"And your name! That I never asked - forgive me for that, t'was rather rude of me - but, whatever they call you, I would love to know it, unless you would rather I go on calling you 'Sir Hare'!"

"Private Burrswop at y'service marm!" The hare said, saluting. "I'm afraid I'm not from around here, 'tis my first time visitin' the Abbey. My companion, Galloper Percival Thackeray, has been here a few times. He'll gladly escort you around, I'm sure."
Galloper Thackeray, who had by now put Valetamine's sword in the gatehouse, scoffed a little at this idea, but not wanting to offend a guest of Redwall's, agreed to it.
"I've been here a few times, I c'n take you around. Wot's y' name, ferret?"

(After today I should be able to post regularly again)
Valetamine was actually surprised with herself at the disappointment she felt. The hare, Private Burrswop, seemed an open, graciously naive enough sort. Pleasant company for a springtime afternoon. For all that, Galloper Thackeray was the antithesis.
Nevertheless, the ferret faced him with the same friendly expression that seen her let in the abbey. He didn't seem too happy to be stuck with her either, undoubtedly much more displeased with the arrangement than she was. Nothing good manners couldn't tackle, she hoped.
"Valetamine Lemand, though you may call me Val if you like! I'm told the name is a bit of a mouthful, and I haven't the heart to tire any noble, duteous soldiers such as yourself over something so trivial as a name."
She thought about extending a paw in friendly gesture, but quickly thought better of it, shifting uncomfortably instead.
"Perhaps - if it sits well with you, Mr. Thackeray - you could tell me where it is you and your good friend have come from while you are showing me around? I remember hearing the legends as a child, of this place and then also of a great - a great fiery mountain; where there were many of your kind, ruled by a wise and powerful badger king."
Valetamine wearily neglected to mention anything of the vast riches also said to be hidden there, nor the many failed attempts by vermin to capture it.
"Being here now, at this... almost mythical red fortress." She gestured around at the walls and the abbey grounds. "It really brings me back, in a way."

(Let's see if we can't get back into the swing of this thread)
Thackeray started them off on their tour, taking his time walking through the Abbey grounds towards the main building, ignoring glances from curious onlookers. He wasn't in any sort of rush to show this vermin the whole Abbey.
"Wotever y've heard is probably true. Both of Salamandastron and Redwall. " He said. Going back to what Val had suggested earlier, he began to talk about his home. "Salamandastron, as y' know, is a mountain fortress by the sea. We protect th' coast and the surroundin' areas. And 'tis Badger Lord, not king. Lord Lasair is our current Lord. Current Abbot is Abbot Whittle."
He stopped walking right outside the doors leading into Great Hall. "Stick by me in here. Won't have any funny business, wot."
