After the council meeting, Cypress' top priority was to head out into the woods to gather what he neededto stock the infirmary. This posed a problem, of course, because he would need assistance. After a moment of thought, he decided that the best peraon to ask would be the medic that had come in with the other hares-the redwallers would all be busy with their own jobs, and if there were vermin in the woods, a fighting hare would be most capable.
He asked around, and finally found Frederick.
"Hello, I am heading out to the woods for supplies, would you be interested in joining me?" He asked. Cypress was not about to ask for help in any obvious way, but he knew that the other hare would be able to discern why he needed assistance.

Fernleaf was sitting on the stairs and leaning on his staff. He was deep in thought. He no longer belonged in his small hut, as it was in a dangerous place, right in the path of the vermin horde. And he no longer belonged with them, he was not a vermin anymore. It was doubtful that he belonged here at Redwall. The Dibbuns loved him, and he had the backing of Mother Snowpaw, and of the otter that he had healed and saved his life. The others, he knew there was doubt, for the sole reason that he was born a ferret.
And of course, all ferrets were vermin. But he was not, he hadn't been for the past fifteen seasons. He would never go back to that. He had been a goodbeast for so long, he had forgotten the ways of the vermin. He had even forgotten the name he had back then. So where did he belong? He wished he knew.
He looked up and saw two beasts talking, his ears perked up as they were going into the woods for supplies. But they had better be quick, the horde would be here very soon now. His hood still covered his face, hiding his features, even if he had been revealed for what he was. But should he offer his help? Would they even respond? He sighed.

Frederick After a time, Frederick had been relieved from his sentry duty upon the walltop. While he had no trouble with sentry duty—besides, orders were orders—the lanky young hare had to admit that he was glad to have a chance to rest or to explore the Abbey. Perhaps he might get a chance to speak with Dianthus; he’d missed his friend’s company. Not entirely certain what to do with himself at the moment, Frederick found that his footpaws were carrying him to the place the Abbey-dwellers called the Great Hall. He gazed about curiously, trying to take in every detail. It was quite a large room, and certainly beautiful. The sun’s rays filtered through the great stained-glass windows, splashing the sandstone floor with multicolored light. Great columns reached up to the high ceiling. But what caught his attention most was the finely-made tapestry.
He could dimly remember hearing his parents mention it in their stories of visiting the Abbey. It was just as beautiful as he had heard… It was amazing to be able to see it for himself (even if he very much wished that the circumstances of their coming were happier ones). Whiskers twitching thoughtfully, he admired it, taking note of the armored mouse in the tapestry’s center. That fellow looked like a perilous beast, leaning upon such a great sword with a smile on his face. Frederick had only been admiring the tapestry for a moment, however, when his long ears caught the sound of pawsteps upon the floor, coupled with another sound that he couldn’t quite identify. He turned about and spotted a dark-furred hare coming toward him. The fellow was a young beast, quite tall and sturdily-built, and walked with the aid of a cane.
"Hello, I am heading out to the woods for supplies, would you be interested in joining me?"
Ah, yes, this fellow was the infirmary keeper here. …Cypress, wasn’t it? Frederick gave the other hare a brief salute. Though Cypress hadn’t come right out and said it, Frederick could hazard a guess as to what he was asking. That is, Cypress could perhaps use a paw with gathering supplies. …And with those blighters possibly skulking about, well, it might not be a bad idea to have an armed beast about.
“Yes, sah, I would be,” he replied, nodding slightly.

He returned the nod politely, trying to stand a little straighter. "Excellent. I have what I need already, if there is nothing else that you require before we head out, we can go." He said decisively.
They were soon out in the cool woods, and Cypress sighed happily. It was a lovely day for such a walk, and he was almost able to forget the imminent danger that they were all in. He was less pleased with how slow he was however, walking with the other hare especially made it obvious.
"So, you are the medic that arrived with the company, correct?" He asked. "Is there anything that you need?"

It was Snowpaw that convinced Fernleaf to join Cypress and Frederick. She picked him up and propelled him to the gate. "Come on, you silly ferret, stop sitting there feeling sorry for yourself. Get out there and help them. They need to get their things and come back before all the vermin outside get here."
Fernleaf knew better than to protest, not in the paws of that big badger. "I'm going." he said.
He went out into the woods, following the two. "Mind if I tag along? In my seasons, I have learned a thing or two about herbs and what makes goodbeasts well. I can help gather them and we'll be back in long before the vermin come."

(Mind if I join?) Jeremiah the ferret was practically hidden from view up a tall oak tree. His hind legs dangled down as so did his tail but the peridot foliage shrouded him from sight to most creatures. Looking down, he observed the mad capers of younger dibbuns who were chasing each other around the immaculate lawns of redwall abbey. Turning his gaze upwards, he let out a sigh. "Still some don't accept me" Jeremiah muttered bitterly. Most of them had accepted the other ferret, Fernleaf but he, Jeremiah still felt that others were hostile towards him. Yes, he was a ferret. But surely it's what you think that counts. He let his eyes close as the summer day buzzed over his tranquil ears.
