Full Name: Tabare [Tah-ba-ray] Deepwater
Gender: ...eh.
Pronouns: They/Them/Theirs
Age: Young Adult
Species: Capybara
Appearance: Tabare is a mix of familiar features in unfamiliar combination. They’re heavily built and as large as a badger, with coarse, sand colored fur that goes darker towards the nose and ear tips. Their face is somewhat ratlike, but more square in shape with small, round ears and high-set eyes and nostrils. Their hands and feet are black and webbed like an otter, with short, thick nails.
They don’t wear much in the way of clothing. Several strings of colorful beads strung with malachite, jasper, lapis, and even bits of gold hang around their neck, and an iridescent yellow-green feather hangs from their left ear on a golden hoop. A cream-colored woven sash hangs around their waist, interwoven with dyed threads and edged with more beads.
Personality: Tabare has lived a relatively easy life, protected from most of the world’s dangers by their status in their society. As a result they’re an easygoing creature fond of long naps, good food, and of course, sailing. They aren’t exactly lazy - Tabare will work hard when times call for it - but they’ll always take advantage of downtime to relax. They get along with most everyone and will always attempt to defuse conflict, for better or worse.
Allies: A stranger in a strange land, Tabare has no allies.
Enemies: For the same reason, Tabare doesn’t really have enemies.
Strengths: The strength that comes with size, a very strong swimmer.
Weakness: Unfamiliar with local culture, terrible with cold weather.
Goal: To find out what happened to their lost crew, and hopefully bring them home.
Background: Tabare hails from a place they call the River, a large, winding river through dense tropical forest somewhere across the sea. Because of the dense jungle and more vicious predators, villages tend to be isolated and scattered across the banks of the river. In this place, capybaras hold a position of some status, acting as captains of the river ferries that transport animals, supplies, and information along the riverbanks.
Tabare lived near the mouth of the River, where animals lived more densely and the occasional ship from across the sea came to stop and trade. Without much responsibility on their shoulders, Tabare had the freedom to mingle with these traders, learning their language and hearing stories of lands beyond the sea. It sparked a flame of wanderlust in them, and despite warnings to the contrary they assembled a small crew of like-minded creatures and a ship to carry them across the wider waters.
Their ventures went well for a time. Then there came a storm...
Quirks: Can hold their breath for up to five minutes, occasionally slips into their own language when excited or stressed.
Weapons: A decent brawler, and can do some damage with a boat oar.
Other things that may be important: Tabare’s ability to get along with other animals almost borders on the supernatural. I mean, have you seen capybaras?
