Full Name: Dmitri
*Nick Name(s): I’d be amused if he ended up with one. I don’t think he would be.
Gender: Male
Pronouns: He/him
Age: Young adult (about 19-20)
Species: Rat
Appearance: Dmitri is a tall rat with a lean, fit build. His fur is so dark it might easily be mistaken for black if not for the slight reddish-brown tint (most obvious when the sunlight catches it). He has sharp features and dark eyes, and might be considered fairly good-looking, in a cold sort of way. It's apparent he takes at least some pride in his appearance and hygiene, and his clothing, though slightly worn, fits well and flatters him. His clothes are almost all dark and they, and his other equipment, are kind of plain, but nice enough to indicate he probably comes from a semi-wealthy background. (Thanks to the wonderful zelebirbo, there is now ART! See below!)
Personality: Though definitely not outright evil, Dmitri is far from the most pleasant. He has absolutely no problem with lying and manipulating to get what he wants, or even just for fun. He's very self-centered, and vaguely spoiled. Though he has no fondness for violence, he has a bit of a cruel streak and enjoys messing with people mentally and emotionally, particularly those he strongly dislikes or, unfortunately, often those he does like. It's almost as if the more someone interests him the more he feels the desire to torment them (though occasionally it may be that he likes someone specifically BECAUSE of how they react to his tormenting). This confuses even him, and sometimes causes him to feel conflicted. He tends to be somewhat arrogant, though his superior attitude sometimes conceals fairly significant self-doubt, and it seems to be when his confidence is lowest that he lashes out the most, taking his failure or anger at himself out on those around him. Despite the difficulty he has making actual friends, though, he does like having someone he can actually trust and have a good time with.
Allies: Possibly his family/old friends, wherever they are now
Enemies: The army he deserted
Strengths: Manipulative, a good archer, decently educated, and an alright fighter (though he’ll try to avoid it).
Weakness: Self-centered, often cowardly, prone to over-estimating his own cunning, can take both criticism and personal failure VERY hard, and doesn't really know how to handle his emotions or certain social situations. Afraid of deep water.
*Goal: He isn’t entirely sure. He might like to find a way back home, hoping things are as he left them and he can pick his old life back up, but in the meantime is just trying to survive and find a comfortable place to stay and enough to eat. (Unfortunately with other forces in the area, there’s a very good chance he won’t find his home as he left it, or even still there at all…)
Background: Dmitri was born and raised in a small, recently-settled village comprised almost entirely of rats. As the only son of the chieftain, life was pretty comfortable for him—while not extravagantly wealthy, his family ate well, had nicer clothes, and enjoyed a certain amount of respect and power within the village. Dmitri in particular was able to receive a better education than most of his peers, and very rarely was actually required to work. Instead the young rat spent a lot of his time just doing whatever he pleased, and his favorite hobby quickly became archery, which his mother gave him frequent lessons in. He developed a real talent for it, and often would participate in competitions.
Unfortunately, soon after Dmitri turned 18, everything about his life suddenly changed for the worse. News of a traveling army of rats approaching the village reached the chieftain, and he and his wife made the decision that to assure peace and possibly form some sort of alliance, they would present the horde's leader with the only thing of real value they had—their son. Before he knew it, Dmitri had been sent away to become a soldier in some unknown land.
Life became absolutely miserable for the rat, struggling to follow orders, starving, and forced to fight for things he didn't care about in the slightest. Though he managed to escape serious injury, even periods of peace were a hell of their own, his fellow soldiers often treating him with scorn and derision for the way he had been raised and how he clearly detested the violence in which he was participating.
His breaking point finally came as the army was retreating from a series of particularly stinging defeats. Their leader had decided to take his remaining soldiers, of which there were now quite few, to a new land across the sea. Having always had a terrible fear of deep water, even just in the small lake near his village, Dmitri panicked at the thought of boarding a ship. His fear was great enough that he decided to finally risk what he had been contemplating since being forced to enlist—desertion. In the state the army had been left by its most recent defeat, it wasn't that difficult for Dmitri to slip off unnoticed with a few supplies. Though he managed to successfully escape, he was left with rather a large problem...he still had nowhere to go.
*Quirks: Carries a wooden flute with him, that he plays rather well (which might be a little odd, since he doesn’t seem the type), and really likes heights for some reason.
*Weapons: Primarily his bow, but he carries a dagger too.
*Other things that may be important: Dmitri probably has the potential to be pushed by circumstance and other characters into taking firmer moral stances/actually caring about things other than himself, but could kind of go either way. I think overall he’s inclined more towards developing in a “good” direction, but also might not!
